Tomatoes! But How Do I Plant Them? Tomatoes. They are so good for you, and grow so well for so many, we decided they should be grown by everyone. It has been discovered that the tomato is a fantastic anti-cancer food because it stops the toxic oxygen molecules. Although for some others, the tomatoes, as in sauce, will trigger heartburn, or may even cause a migraine. So know your body. Growing tomatoes is so simple. And if you've never or don't remember vine-ripened tomatoes, you are in for a treat! They are so sweet and delicious, little children devour the sweet 100's and have been known to think of them as a sweet treat! When it comes to growing them, you need not be a gardener or green-thumber of any type. Actually, it may be a bonus to the type of neglect they require. First, think, lean and mean. Don't molly-coddle them.
Water, pick off dead leaves, a little nutrient to get them started, and just let these plants be. They like morning and afternoon sun and will grow and be hardy even in all day sun. They are easy to care for, just water every 2-3 days. They don't like frost, so be sure frost season is over and if one comes up, toss a sheet over it for cover for the night. Planting tomatoes can be so fun. Even if all you have is a ledge or balconette. Even if you start from seed in those plantable pots that all of the nurseries are carrying. Even if you're new to planting. Try it. Once, twice, three times. Watching something grow and nurturing it, is a great reward. Tomatoes are also very rewarding because of their yield. And the varieties are vast. There are sweet 100's, cherry, wadda's, better boy's, early girl's, beefsteak, roma's.and all will grow in the ground or pot. Sometimes pots are easier because they are raised up off of the ground so there is no kneeling. Also, there may be less infestation and fewer thieving squirrels. Tomatoes also have great social value. Giving some of the high yield crop away is a great reason to speak to neighbors you haven't spoken to in years. Maybe you'll meet some new friends too. Let's plant. PlantingGuideThe first step is getting your bucket and potting soil and tomato plant, 4" is great, and fertilizer. All of these items can be found in places other than nurseries, such as the general store chains. First place drainage rocks in the bottom of your bucket. Put in some soil. Put on some fertilizer. Put in more soil. Carve out a hole for the plant. Remove the last two leaves from the stock and plant tomato plant up to first removed leaf. Drop in Plant. Fill with soil. Water. In two days water again. If the leaves begin to turn upwards, less water or maybe more water. Yellow, again maybe less or more water. When you water let it deep soak so that the roots go down to the water, not up to the surface, and every couple of days is just fine. Remember, lean and mean! Pick them, fry them when they're green, eat them, give them away, freeze them, juice them, and just grow them. They'll really give more than you bargained for. And that's priceless. Find your spot in the garden that has the most sun. Dig your hole. Put in your fertilizer, dirt and then your plant. Fill the hole will dirt. Place your tomato cage around the plant to try to contain it. Be aware that it very well may begin to lift the cage; at which time, try rearranging the leaves and maybe topping the plant.
